0 Clicker Dog Training: STOP Leash Pulling! This is an exercise that supplements the techniques that I have presented on this topic already. It is not by any means a conclusive, end-all solution to stop leash-pulling. However, after having worked through everything else mentioned in my other videos on teaching loose leash walking, I find that a lot of dogs learn very quickly with this approach that they must not pull if they want to continue the walk. It is important to note however, that using food as a reward after every ’roundabout’ may cause some dogs to pull just so they can come around for a reward. Using food rewards occasionally should eliminate this problem.

hey i have a 1year old shih tzu, she pulls half the time, but not as bad as what she used to, i bought her a non pull harness and most the time it doesnt work. when she pulls i say “here” and i put the treat behind me thinking that it may stop her pulling, and i did this constantly throughout the walk, and on the way home, i didnt give her any treats and she didnt pull and she kept looking at me :) i think its starting to work i just need to keep persisting :) .

    Have you tried any …
Have you tried any of the other techniques I explain in my other videos? Like I mentioned in this video+description, this is a relatively advanced idea that will work with some dogs whose excitement level has already been somewhat lessened through several other exercises first. Please see those first if you haven’t already.

    Hiya, i have a dog …
Hiya, i have a dog that pulls due to excitement and i tried the same method that you explained in this video and i found that my dog seemed to view coming back to my side a game. So he would pull as part of the game and then complete it by coming to my side repeatedly on walks. Pull heel pull heel pull heel pull heel constantly – he didn’t stop pulling to avoid having to heel as suggested.

  20. RiDogCentar says:

    Yes, if that …
Yes, if that applies to training, then it totally makes sense, but in dailylife situations, when the dog does get excited around something and it is going to pull to get somewhere, we could stop, get a dog (by calling him, or something like that), and walk in side, and pass things in an arc!

  21. tab289 says:

    Great idea! I will …
Great idea! I will look into it.

  22. tab289 says:

    Frustration is …
Frustration is always a possibility in training when we withhold something the dog wants – but it can be avoided. In this case, I wouldn’t attempt this exercise until I have fully exhausted the ideas I discuss on calm loose leash walking in two previous videos. I agree that sometimes it’s a better idea to walk in the other direction, but we can’t always do that :) Ideally the dog shouldn’t be over-aroused when bringing this exercise to the table. Hope that makes sense!

  23. RiDogCentar says:

    think about this… …
think about this…in this way, you can easily get an yo-yo effect…(specialy, when the dog is excited)…maybe it would be better to continue walking in some other direction. If you “ask” (with standing still) the dog to go around you, and move forward to something that he is so much focused on, you will easily get frustrated dog who is so much into something and bothered by you :-) …just think about it….
(sorry, english is not my mother language, I hope you can understand what I mean)
